My Future
The physical and emotional journeys I experienced while in Namibia were profound, and they have greatly impacted my world view. Upon returning from Namibia, I was able to extend my learning experience through an academic approach in classes and presentations. Discussing my summer abroad with other students who also served, researched, and worked in developing countries over the summer has been particularly insightful as I seek to better understand my experience and role as a short-term volunteer in Namibia. Beyond the classroom, teaching in Namibia enhanced my patience and creativity skills, and understanding of the vast differences and similarities among people around the world. My work in Namibia has created a sense of responsibility to the learners and teachers I interacted with and promoted a sense of "global citizenship." I know this ten week experience will be something I continually reflect on, learn from, and understand as I further develop my interests in education and under-privileged populations.
Although I am still unsure what my future holds, I hope to participate in a teaching service program after graduating from Notre Dame, either domestically or abroad. I have become more interested in English language learning as a result of teaching in Namibia and hope to pursue this interest in my future. I plan on eventually going to graduate school for educational psychology after I am able to engage more closely with issues related to poverty, education, and learning. Undoubtedly, my internship with WorldTeach in Namibia has laid a strong foundation for my future endeavors.
